I´m living with my hostparents in their cosy datja in the outskirts of Volgograd. After enjoying breakfast in the garden it was time to visit the Mamaev Hill with the 80 meter high statue Mother Russia that can be seen all around the city. During the second worldwar horrible battles were taken place at this strategic hill and many soldiers on both sides lost their lifes. Entering the memorial was very moving. Christian met a Russian man that lost his brother here. He himself survived the war.
In the afternoon we visited a local Rotaryproject. Our splendid guide Sergej is a doctor and runs the Rehabilitation center Stupeni. In this public school there are two programs: pre-school for children with or without disabilities and in the evening the school give classes for older children with disabilities - art, music, computing and physical activites. The Rotaryclub provides material for these classes. The aim is to help the teenagers to get education and find a work with future possibilities.
We also enjoyed a beautiful concert that was given by the young students in the center. Experience how they challenged themselves was fantastic. One of the students, Masha, showed some short movies she had made about being disabled. Sergej is very involved in this project and it was inspiring and emotional to visit his center.
